Hon Lord William Morris of Handsworth OJ

Patron – National Black Boys Can Association

“The education system in the UK has been failing black boys for years. It has been recognised that a sound education offers benefits to young people that exceed financial prospects”

The National Black Boys Can Association has for many years been dedicated to community support and sharing and dissemination of best practice, in order to develop a transferable model which can be used, adopted and adapted by local community projects to suit their own local needs.  As a community led organisation it has championed the issue of underachieving Black boys, and has developed a range of resources and support programmes for community groups.  It is a proactive, action-oriented organisation that aims to provide black boys with educational opportunity, valuable life skills, and the self-esteem, confidence and determination to succeed. All these qualities are essential if they are to overcome disadvantage and make the most of their formative and adult years. Raising black boy’s awareness of the barriers which many of them face, and empowering them with strategies for overcoming those barriers, will pay dividends to the boys not only throughout their years at school but throughout their adult years too.

Bristol Black Boys Can/WISE Organisation is a charitable enterprise that delivers an educational and empowerment program aimed at Black and dual heritage children in our community. Our objective is to develop young minds to enable them to achieve their full potential in life.

Q:        Is BBBC only for black boys?

A:         No BBBC is for boys and girls aged 9 – 16 who are of African Caribbean and or dual heritage.

Q:        Do I have to pay to be a part of the supplementary school?

A:         Yes, but the first session is free whilst every other session attracts a fee of £1.50.  There is also a registration fee of £5.00 per child.

Q:        Are all the teachers CRB checked?

A:         Yes all the teachers are CRB checked.

Q:        What happens when schools are on holidays or half term will you still be in operation then?

A:         During holidays a reduced service will be operated, and during the half term we do not plan to have any schools.  This may be subject to amendment later on though.

Q:        Will the supplementary school be enough for my child to do well in his/her upcoming GCSE?

A:         As the name supplementary suggests, it will help your child with main stream education, not replace it.

Q:        Do I need to buy additional books and other learning resources while my child attends the BBBC supplementary school

A:         Not necessarily. This will be limited to particular situations and totally dependent on an individual basis.
